The Horbury Hunt Award recognises excellence and innovation in brick craftsmanship and acknowledges the role architects, designers, landscape designers, builders, masonry contractors and brick manufacturers play in achieving that excellence and innovation in built projects.

About the Horbury Hunt Award
This award was initiated by the Horbury Hunt Club Incorporated and is being managed by Think Brick Australia, the peak body representing Australia's brick industry. Its purpose is to reward innovation and craftsmanship in brickwork and recognises the contribution of architects, builders, bricklayers and manufacturers in that process.

Previous Winners
The 2008 Horbury Hunt Award winner was the Mornington Centre with a High Commendation going to The Nigel Peck Centre for Learning and Leadership, Melbourne Grammar School.

Jury and judging process
A jury of architects, brick industry representatives and architectural media will select a winner for each category and award any commendations, from all the nominations received by the due date. The jury's decision is final and no negotiation will be entered into concerning their decision.

Awards presentation
The winners of each category will be announced at a dinner on Thursday September 24th in Sydney. Tickets will be available for purchase at $150 per ticket or $1500 should you wish to purchase a table of ten.

About John Horbury Hunt
John Horbury Hunt (1838-1904) was an architect who came to Australia from America in 1863. Hunt is renowned for the distinctive, radical architecture he introduced to Sydney and rural New South Wales, including St Peter's Cathedral and Booloominbah in Armidale, and Convent of the sacred Heart and Tivoli on Rose Bay.

Nominated project must meet the following criteria:
Completed since January 2007
Not previously entered in the same category of the previous Horbury Hunt Awards
Must be constructed predominantly in clay face brickwork, or use clay pavers or bricks for the Landscape category.
Must exemplify innovation, collaboration between project team, and show a high level of skill and craftsmanship
Must be submitted by the closing date of June 19th, 2009 at 5pm
Must be located in Australia
Only nominations that are submitted in full will be accepted
Only nominations that are submitted online will be accepted
Only one nomination per project will be accepted

Commercial category
Commercial projects including Government, public, health, education and multi-residential projects.

Residential category
Single dwellings including alterations and additions

Landscape category
Any public or private landscape project that incorporates clay bricks and/or pavers

Terms and Conditions

  • Photographs, drawings and other illustrative material submitted as part of this nomination may be exhibited, published and used in marketing activities in the promotion of the Horbury Hunt Award and as a case study on the Think Brick Australia website
  • The winning project and any receiving commendations will also be published in Think Brick Australia's annual magazine Facing Design
  • Late material will not be accepted
  • All members of the project team to consent to the nomination
  • The jury's decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into regarding that decision
  • Think Brick Australia respects your privacy and will not share your contact information with any third party

  • Was your project completed since January 2007?
  • Is the project constructed primarily in clay face brick or (for the landscape category) in clay face brick or clay pavers?
General details
  • Write a project name (max 50 characters will work best). This is how the project will be referred to in all communication about the Award.
  • Category ¨C you can enter one of three categories (Commercial, Residential or Landscape)
Entry contact person

Supply your name, email address and phone number so we can contact you with any queries about your entry or to confirm it has been received.

Project team

Supply names and contact details for key people within the project team:

  • Architect or designer
  • Builder
  • Masonry contractor
About this project

Prepare a description of up to 600 words about the project. Remember to include how the project demonstrates innovation and collaboration of all the project team.

Main image

Choose one photographic image to be used as your main entry image.

The image should be jpeg format, minimum 500 x 500 pixels.

You can adjust the position and zoom level within the tool provided on the entry form.

Slideshow images

You can upload up to 5 additional images that will appear in a slideshow with your entry.

Images should be jpeg format, minimum 500 x 500 pixels.

Plans

A document containing detailed plans should be supplied with your entry, including floor plan and elevations.

Supply this as a PDF (A4 layout) with a maximum file size of 2 Mb.

Brick detail

A document containing a brick detail at scale of 1:20 or larger must be supplied with your entry. Supply this as a PDF (A4 layout) with a maximum file size of 2 Mb.
